Children's Storytime and Activities

All programs are held at the Islamic Resource Center every Monday and Wednesday, from June 23 to August 6.
Registration is REQUIRED for each activity, as space is limited. Registration for all events begins at 10:00 on the Monday prior. Please bring your ticket with you - it will be on your phone or you can print it at home.

 

Storytime:

Wednesdays at 10:30 AM (ages 3–6)
 

Activities:

Mondays & Wednesdays, 1:30–3:00 PM (ages 6+)
 

Week #2 Theme: Building Up Friendships!

Wednesday, July 2:

Activity: Muhammad: The Last Prophet Movie and Popcorn.

Time to relax, enjoy some delicious freshly popped popcorn, and watch a great movie.

Week #3 Theme: Allah’s Amazing World

Monday, July 7:

Activity: Dive into Patterns! 

Did you know that there are so many mathematical patterns in the natural world? One of the names of Allah is Al-Khaaliq - The Creator - and the amazing patterns in His creation are how we can understand His power. 

We will learn about these patterns and make some art to demonstrate them.

Wednesday, July 9:

Story Time: “Patterns, shapes, and more!” (no registration required)
Activity: Discovery World presents “Bubbles and Geometry.”

Explore how math can become art. Students will investigate patterns and tiling, and how understanding bubbles helps engineers and designers to create amazing structures.

Week #4 Theme: Creatures Large and Small!

Monday, July 14:

Activity: Wehr Nature Center presents “Sensational Snakes!”

Wehr Nature Center presents "Sssensational Snakes.” In Janet Halfmann’s book, Garter Snake at Willow Creek Lane, children will be introduced to the often misunderstood world of snakes.

Children will participate in the telling of this “scaly” story and then spend time being “ophiologists” (snake scientists). Snake myths will be dispelled, and their astonishing adaptations will be studied.

Story Time: “Animals All Around” (no registration required)
Activity: Cattail Critters Petting Zoo visits MWC! Live animals!

Our friends from the Cattail Critters farm will be bringing some favorite animal friends for us to meet and learn about.

Week #5 Theme: Moon and Stars, Going to Mars!

Monday, July 21:

Activity: Milwaukee Public Museum presents “All Things Space”

Join MPM as we investigate our corner of space and beyond! Learn how our understanding of the universe has changed through the years.

Participants will get a chance to model the movement of celestial bodies and do a hands-on project about the solar system.

Wednesday, July 23:

Story Time: “I See the Moon!” (no registration required)
Activity: Mars Astronaut Workshop - hands on activities!

Next stop, Mars!  

Do you have what it takes to become a NASA astronaut?  We will learn about the skills needed to become an astronaut, practice our astronaut skills, and celebrate our accomplishments with some real “Astronaut Ice Cream!”

Monday, July 28:

Activity: Mad Science presents “Fundamental Forces”

What do gravity, inertia, and centripetal force have in common? They are all part of the fun in this introduction to physics. Feel the pull of precession with the bike wheel gyroscope and strike the perfect balance with the Gravity Game™.

Story Time: “Animal Actions!” (no registration required)
Activity: NovelMotion Circus presents “Amazing Physics”

Prepare to be amazed as the performers from Novel Motion Circus visit the IRC and do a cool performance followed by time for kids to try the “German Wheel” and other physical tricks. It’s science in motion!
